I am a 55 yr old Viet Nam era Army veteran, who has first hand experience with homelessness, addiction, prison, and fortunately, recovery. For me, it was the local VA medical center, MMT, and the Phoenix House Homeless veterans temporary housing program that gave me enough hope, encouragement, and health to be able to open my eyes to the resources and genuine interest and hand up that was so desparately needed just three short years ago. Today, I have already received an Associate's Degree in Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counseling, and am completing a Master's program via state funded vocational rehabilitation and the VA benefits and medical programs to help me to grow in focus and endurance and confidence like I had not experienced in decades. **Just an update - it is now December 2009, and I am still in school; semester break. I will complete the BA program this semester and now searching for funding to continue to grad school. More later.
