FREE Access to Full Text: This article provides an overview of what is known about the homeless services workforce and discusses needs for training and professional development in the field. It is featured in the "Future of Homeless Services" Special Issue, guest edited by the Homelessness Resource Center and published in the Open Health Services and Policy Journal. The authors explore the future of workforce development in homeless services.
The available data are imperfect but suggest that between 202,300 and 327,000 workers provide homeless services. However, little is known about the composition of this workforce and little attention has been paid to developing its capacity to address the multiple problems of those living without homes. Workforce development covers a range of activities from recruitment through training and credentialing — all of which support the goal of strengthening the professional identity, skills, and resilience of the workforce.

Success in ending homelessness is likely to be out of reach without serious investments in the professional development of homeless service providers. The Interagency Council on Homelessness is ideally positioned to establish a national agenda for workforce development in homeless services and to leverage action across federal agencies to build workforce capacity. Thanks, Justine! The link to the 101 content is great - and I've sent an email about getting on the waitlist for the Tacoma training.

Hi Fern,

Thanks so much for your interest in our curriculum. We offer it at four annual regional trainings around the country. We will be in El Paso, TX on May 25 & 26, and then will be in Tacoma, WA in June 2010. Unfortunately, the Tacoma event is full, but you can contact lwinn@center4si.com to be added to the waitlist.

You can also read "Homelessness 101" to learn more about our training topics: http://homeless.samhsa.gov/Resource/Homelessness-101-What-Do-You-Need-to-Know-46769.aspx?search=homelessness+101&orgSearchString=homelessness+101

The article mentions that HRC has developed a basic knowledge curriculum for homeless service workers. How can I access that curriculum?
