SAMHSA’s Services in Supportive Housing Initiative Kicks Off!

Services in Supportive Housing developed to meet the needs of individuals finding themselves housed after an extended period of time on the streets. This program offers wrap around services to help keep these individuals on the path of recovery and remain in housing.

“To create a learning community that fosters peer-to-peer support and the sharing of practices and knowledge in order to continue progress towards eliminating chronic homelessness.” This objective rang true during the December 2007 kick-off meeting for SAMHSA’s Services in Supportive Housing (SSH) Initiative.
SSH grew out of the recently ended Chronic Homelessness Initiative, a collaboration of SAMHSA, HRSA, HUD, VA, and the Interagency Council on Homelessness. By funding nine homeless service agencies under this new Initiative, SSH continues SAMHSA’s commitment to people experiencing chronic homelessness with mental health and substance use problems. The program focuses on providing intensive individualized services to individuals and families who have experienced chronic homelessness and are now living in permanent supportive housing.
The SSH learning community got together for a group photograph that includes staff from: Central City Concern in Portland Oregon, Community Connections in Washington DC, Contra Costa Health Services in California, Cook Inlet Housing Authority and Cook Inlet Tribal Council in Alaska, Phoenix Programs, Inc., in Missouri, Pine Street Inn in Boston, Project Renewal and Vocational Instruction Project Community Services Inc., in New York City and St. Vincent de Paul Village, Inc. in California. Also included are staff from the Homelessness Resource Center, SAMHSA Federal Project Officer Nicole-Gaskin Laniyan, and Larry Rickards, former Branch Director of the Homeless Programs Branch at SAMHSA’s Center for Mental Health Services.
The SSH Grantee Meeting also provided an opportunity for grantees to say a fond farewell to Larry Rickards. Larry is retiring after almost 30 years of working at SAMHSA. He has worked with staff from many of the grantee sites. He was treated to a dinner and a fabulous pair of glasses befitting his position at SAMHSA. We wish him the very best and want to thank him for his support and guidance.
