This article examines the gradual shift in care from mental hospitals and institutions to primary and community settings. The authors discuss the struggle some less-developed countries have with balancing poor resources in infrastructure and manpower with the increasing burden of psychiatric disorders and the need to provide care. This article looks at the results of a recent international data collection exercise undertaken by WHO, from the perspective of mental health care in primary and community settings especially in developing countries.
