Millions of adults in the United States are affected by mental illness. The majority of these adults are, and or will become parents. Despite the prevalence of parenthood among adults with mental illness, and the potential for negative effects on some children, there are very few programs or services available to meet the needs of parents and their children. In addition, available services have not been rigorously evaluated. Little is known about what is helpful for families, or effective with respect to enhancing family and family member functioning as well as quality of life. (Authors)
