I first learned of Motivational Interviewing several years ago when I attended a training with Ken Kraybill, who presented a most entertaining session on the technique. The approach intrigued me and I began, rather clumsily at first, to integrate the approach into my outreach engagement efforts.
It didn't take long to get the hang of MI (although I am in no way a "pro" yet) and I soon discovered I was using MI techniques in almost every discussion I had, both at work and in my personal life. Not only did it improve dramatically the level of information I was receiving from clients, it also helped improve my personal relationships with family and friends. A great bonus, indeed!
If you're hesitant to give MI a try, you're not alone. But I can attest to the fact that once you really begin to work it in earnest, the payoffs are tremendous and I think it will be a game-changer for just about anything you might apply it to.
